We are focused on the first three stages of needs according to Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs. We are looking forward to a better future for the children and pray that God will continue to supply our needs. With His mercy and grace we will continue to serve Him.
The Six Stages: 1. Survival Needs - food, water, shelter and clothing 2. Safety Needs - to feel secure & protected 3. Love & Belonging Needs - Every individual has the need to be loved, to belong in a group or family where they feel accepted and recognized as part of the social environment 4. Self Esteem Needs - validation of worth, ego gratification, recognition, prestige and sense of respect 5. Cognitive Needs - higher intellectual development 6. Aesthetic Value - need for a more acceptable and presentable self. This is more on the aspect of physical appearance.
The five Caling children were abandoned by their father and left under the care of their mother, Mariana, a factory worker earning an average income of P500 pesos a week ($12.50 USD). Upon Deborah's visit to the family's home, we found it nothing more than an abandoned pig pen with bare walls and only a piece of cloth to cover the sides. No furniture. No appliances. Just a piece of wood for them to lie on. The children had to beg for food that consisted of only rice and leafy vegetables. They very seldom ate meat or fish. Four of the children walked over a kilometer to school each day leaving the little one at home. Fearing for the safety of the children from local ganges and finding it hard to support the children, Mariana sought the assistance of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD); a partner of the Deborah Foundation. The family arrived at Deborah and is under our care as of April 11, 2008.
Andrea (affectionately called Andeng) was abandoned by her parents and left under the care of her grandfather who was unable to care for her due to continued illness. She was 11 months old when she was referred to the foundation. Andeng is now two years and 7 months and currently under the care of Nene Halili, a member of the Deborah Board and also Director of the orphanage.
